NCB Capital Impact And Lincoln, Nebraska Community Receive $17,200 Grant To Establish Community Approach To Aging

“Village” Movement Expands to Nebraska with Development of Witherbee Neighborhood Association Village

WASHINGTON, D.C. (September 22, 2008) — NCB Capital Impact and Witherbee Neighborhood Association (WNA) today announced the award of a $17,200 grant from The Mutual Service Cooperative Fund of the Cooperative Development Foundation. The grant-funded work will expand home care options available to elders. Together with the Beacon Hill Village of Massachusetts, NCB Capital Impact will provide technical assistance to create the first operating “Village” model in Nebraska.

The Village model is a new, grassroots community approach to long-term care. Self-governing organizations, Villages help elders remain in their neighborhoods and homes by coordinating and delivering programs and services. This approach complements other community approaches to aging such as Naturally Occurring Retirement Communities (NORC) programs. Currently, thirteen Villages are operating in seven states.

The U.S. senior population is projected to grow from 35 million in 2006 to over 75 million by 2030 according to the Federal Administration on Aging. However, 25-50% of those households are not saving adequately for heath care needs, including the possibility of long-term care during retirement according to The Brookings Institute 2004 Retirement and Long-Term Care Needs: An Overview.

“The need for affordable long-term care choices is rapidly growing. In one way or other, this will affect every American, whether it’s your parents, your spouse, your siblings or you,” commented Terry Simonette, President & CEO of NCB Capital Impact. “We are committed to support mission-critical innovations like the Village that improve the quality of life of all Americans, particularly those in underserved communities,” Simonette added.

“I am pleased to convey our unanimous support for the NCB Capital Impact’s ‘Rural Village Model’ project in the heart of Lincoln, Nebraska. Tabitha Health Care Services is located in the center of the Witherbee Neighborhood and has been a strong support of the WNA. A Village program would augment WNA’s and Tabitha’s missions, efforts and strengths,” said Witherbee Neighborhood Association president, Curtis Wood.

“Tabitha Health Care Services’ expertise in community-based programs such as home care, meals on wheels and hospice care, are a perfect match for the ‘Rural Village Model’ for supporting Elders to age in place and remain independent in their homes,” said Tabitha President & CEO, Keith Fickenscher.
